The new DBA, Doctorate in Business Administration addresses senior managers with an ambitious goal: developing a new kind of leadership in their organizations by applying scientific thinking to management practice. A special relationship with professors , and a personal coach who will follow each participant, are two of the value factors of this training program.
SDA Bocconi School of Management launches its first DBA, Doctorate in Business Administration, starting from the 2017-18 academic year. A three-year program for senior managers determined to become “thought leaders” in their professional field or organization.
The typical candidate is a senior manager or an entrepreneur who has achieved important results after ten or more years of experience and now wants to develop a scientific approach to management practice, to produce new managerial knowledge and publish the results of her/his research.
DBA programs are offered by a small number of schools around the world, mainly located in Europe and North America, and the SDA Bocconi’s DBA is a niche program, with 10-15 carefully selected participants and a high value teacher-participant ratio.
“SDA Bocconi’s DBA stands out for two reasons,” says the program director, Marco Tortoriello, Full Professor of Management at Bocconi University with a long experience in teaching and designing training programs abroad (HEC Paris and IESE Barcelona). “The first one is the top-tier teaching staff that comes from a prestigious university like Bocconi, an almost unique prerogative among business schools. The second reason” – continues Tortoriello – ”is the one-to-one relationship with a personal coach. A professor with a track record of publications on the most important scientific journals will be assigned to each candidate according to her/his research interests. The coach will advise participants on the literature review, dissertation design and writing, keeping in touch with her/him for the duration of the program”.
SDA Bocconi’s DBA is a part-time program. The first two years consist mainly of coursework in four weekly residential modules and distance learning provided with state-of-the-art technology. The third year is mainly devoted to individual research and study, under the close supervision of personal coaches. Participants will write and present their doctoral dissertation, as a research monograph, with close connections to business practice.
Like thePhD in Business Administration, the DBA is considered the highest educational qualification in management, but the two programs are aimed at different candidates: the PhD is aimed at younger participants who want to pursue an academic career, the DBA is designed for senior managers who want to take a qualitative leap in their professional field. The DBA is also different from the MBA, Master in Business Administration. MBA students are young managers who want to develop their career by acquiring knowledge on general management. The DBA has a more specialized focus and participants, whose background often includes an MBA, no longer need to acquire new knowledge, but rather want to refine and produce it.
