50 MIND-TECH 4 SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Research Project by SDA Bocconi for Lendlease

SDA Bocconi School of Management of Bocconi University is carrying out a research project 50 MIND-tech 4 Sustainable future for Lendlease, a global leader in urban regeneration based in Sydney.

In Italy, Lendlease is active on two of the largest urban regeneration projects in Milan and of enormous international importance:

  • MIND Milano Innovation District, a public-private partnership with Arexpo that aims to enhance and develop the entire Expo 2015 site to create an innovation district where the new frontiers of technology and bioscience will converge.
  • Milano Santa Giulia, in partnership with Risanamento Spa, one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Milan, a mixed-use project - tertiary and residential - that aims to combine wellbeing, sustainability, social development for a new European destination.

The MIND project sees the presence of leading international organizations that leverage Italian excellence in health and research including the Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio Hospital, Human Technopole - a life science research hub -, Università Statale, Politecnico di Milano, and among the leading private entities Berkeley Skydeck and Federated Innovation.

Goals

The 50 MIND-tech 4 Sustainable future project aims to identify #50 organizations such as large, highly innovative and sustainability-oriented companies, as well as start-ups and mid-caps with very high potential for innovation and growth, and high-level research and training centers consistent with MIND's project objectives.

50 MIND-tech research

Innovation and sustainability are the keywords that characterize MIND - Milan Innovation District -which will create an innovation district where the new frontiers of technology and bioscience will converge.

The purpose of the research is to explore the pillars and enablers of international best practices by analyzing the #50 selected companies, to promote interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral innovation, encompassing all enabling technology fields (big data, AI&ML, AR&VR, new materials including biomaterials and nanomaterials, microelectronics, HPC and QC, etc.).

Methodology

The research will be carried out in three logical phases:

Phase 1 - CorporatesNeXT4 MIND

The purpose of Phase 1 is to identify the cluster of companies with high potential in terms of innovation and growth and that have a consistent and synergistic value propsition with the MIND ecosystem. Phase 1 consists of:

Bottom-up analysis
  • Identification of target companies based on criteria for innovation and growth (data-driven analysis) with respect to social, environmental as well as economic sustainability.
Top-down analysis

The project involves the activation of a multidisciplinary Scientific Committee composed of professors from Bocconi University/ SDABocconi and Top Practitioners affiliated with the University. The top-down analysis has two purposes:

  • Brain-storming analysis for the study of trends relevant to the identification of corporate and financial institutions, best in class and akin to the sectors/activities of MIND's "anchors" (e.g. Healthcare, bio-tech, life science) and/or akin to the project in terms of value proposition and distinguishing characteristics (innovation ecosystem capable of developing economies of experience and inter- and intra-sector synergies);
  • Feed-back bottom-up analysis to guide and validate the results of the structured analysis based on the data and criteria applied in the project.

Phase 2 - International C-Suite MIND-Tech Forum

July 18, 2023 - The International C-suite Forum 50 MIND-tech 4 Sustainable future is an opportunity for discussion and interaction with top management of large enterprises but also start-ups/ mid-caps with very high growth potential, top research/education centers, with the aim of exploring the pillars and enabling factors of international best practices to promote innovation through the analysis of business models, identification of drivers of change, study of the metamorphosis of organizations and people management.

The results of the discussion will constitute the International C-Suite Forum 50 MIND-tech 4 Sustainable Future Report that will be made available to companies participating in the project.

Phase 3 - International C-Suite 50 MIND-Tech Forum

The International C-Suite 50 MIND-Tech Forum constitutes the final phase of the research project through a closed-door discussion to further discuss the key evidence that emerged in Phases 1 and 2 and the characteristics of companies that can enable the MIND ecosystem to create sustainable value.

Phase 3 is also an opportunity to discover Milan in its artistic and scientific excellence, and the MIND project through a series of events and guided tours.

The distinctive characteristics of the 50 MIND-Tech companies.

  • High propensity for innovation while respecting environmental and social sustainability;
  • High investment in R&D, operating in fields with high growth potential and that intercept the specializations of the Anchors of MIND and the Milan and Lombardy territory (cell&gene therapy, digital therapeuthics, advanced manufacturing);
  • High propensity for collaboration and cooperation with other organizations (universities, hospitals, but also competitors), including across different sectors and disciplinary fields;
  • High propensity and/or ability to attract and retain talent.
